Celebrating 25 Years of Express Service
Since 1998, ACE Rail has connected people from the San Joaquin Valley to the Tri-Valley area. We’ve served hundreds of thousands of riders, safely taking them to and from work and school, giving them time to relax and enjoy the ride, and connecting them to concerts, festivals, and events.Â

Collaboration for a Vision (1995)
In 1995, San Joaquin County and seven cities along the route collaborated to form the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission (SJRRC). This significant move represented the initial step towards the creation of the ACE service. It showcased the vision to enhance regional transportation through collective efforts.
Formation of ACE JPA (May 1997)
In May 1997, the Altamont Commuter Express Joint Powers Authority (ACE JPA) was established by the SJRRC, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), and Alameda Congestion Management Agency (ACMA). This agreement formalized financial support, administrative processes, and governance for the rail service. It marked a pivotal moment in ACE's growth, as it ensured structured oversight and collaboration.
Inaugural Service (1998)
In 1998, on October 19th, ACE commenced passenger rail service, connecting San Jose and Stockton. This momentous occasion marked the birth of ACE as a contributor to improving commuter transportation options in the Bay Area. It showed the organization's dedication to providing a reliable and efficient alternative for commuters.
2002 - Extension of Service to Tracy
In 2002, ACE achieved a significant milestone by extending its service to Tracy, California. This expansion was a pivotal step in expanding the coverage and enhancing connectivity for commuters in the region. It underscored ACE's commitment to growth and meeting the transportation needs of a broader population.
Rapid Growth in Passenger Ridership
Within the first five years of operation, ACE experienced rapid growth in passenger ridership, reaching full capacity on its trainsets in less than a year after its inauguration. This surge in popularity indicated ACE's immediate and substantial impact on reducing congestion and enhancing regional transportation. The addition of a third-round trip in 2001 further demonstrated ACE's responsiveness to growing demand.

Renaming of Station (2003)
In 2003, the station was renamed Robert J. Cabral. This change was a significant tribute to an individual who played an essential role in the community's development. Renaming the station acknowledged his contributions and honored his memory.
Stockton Solution Shuttle (January 6, 2003)
On January 6, 2003, ACE introduced the Stockton Solution Shuttle, allowing Stockton passengers to utilize the ACE trip that was previously terminated at Lathrop/Manteca. This innovation was pivotal as it expanded the reach and accessibility of ACE's service to Stockton residents, offering a more comprehensive transportation solution. It simplified commutes and improved regional connectivity.
Service Extension to Stockton (August 1, 2005)
ACE extended its service to Stockton on August 1, 2005. This extension was a significant step, making ACE accessible to a broader population and offering a more convenient travel option for Stockton residents. The expansion of service represented a commitment to enhancing transportation options and reducing congestion on the roads.
Infrastructure Improvements (2006)
Construction of Second Platform and Pedestrian Tunnel: Service to Santa Clara was suspended to allow for the construction of a second platform and a pedestrian tunnel at the station. This construction project was vital for improving the station's infrastructure and passenger experience. It demonstrated ACE's dedication to safety and accessibility, making it a more reliable transportation choice for commuters.
Fourth-Round Trip (August 28, 2006): ACE added a fourth-round trip on August 28, 2006, operating at midday using one of the existing train sets. This addition was a significant enhancement in service, offering passengers more flexibility and choice in their travel schedules. It improved the overall convenience and efficiency of ACE's operations.
Voter Approval of Extension of Measure K (November 7, 2006)
On November 7, 2006, San Joaquin County voters approved a 20-year extension of Measure K. This extension of the transportation sales tax measure signified a continued commitment to funding and supporting ACE's operations. It ensured the sustainability of ACE's services and its contribution to the community's transportation needs.
Challenges During the Great Recession (November 2, 2009)
Suffering from reduced funding due to the Great Recession, ACE was compelled to cut the lightly used midday trip on November 2, 2009. This decision, though challenging, demonstrated ACE's adaptability and responsible fiscal management during tough economic times.
Restoration of Service to Santa Clara (May 2012)
In May 2012, ACE restored its service to the Santa Clara station. This was a significant milestone as it marked ACE's commitment to expanding its reach and accessibility to commuters. By resuming service to Santa Clara, ACE enhanced transportation options for residents and helped reduce traffic congestion on the roads.
Fourth Rush-Hour Round Trip (October 1, 2012)
On October 1, 2012, ACE introduced a fourth rush-hour round trip, running approximately one hour after existing trips. This addition was a notable improvement in service, providing commuters with more flexibility and convenience. It allowed for a more extensive range of travel times, accommodating more passengers, and improving the efficiency of daily commutes.
Rebranding to Altamont Corridor Express (December 2012)
In December 2012, ACE underwent a rebranding from Altamont Commuter Express to Altamont Corridor Express. This rebranding was a strategic move to reflect the company's broader vision and expanded scope of service. It signified ACE's commitment to not only serving commuters but also exploring new opportunities for growth and transportation solutions within the corridor.
State-of-the-Art Maintenance Facility (March 2014)
In March 2014, ACE achieved a significant milestone with the opening of a state-of-the-art $65 million maintenance facility in Stockton. This facility played a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the quality of ACE's rolling stock. It showcased ACE's dedication to infrastructure development and operational excellence, ensuring the reliability and safety of its services.
Transition of Management to SJJPA (July 1, 2015)
On July 1, 2015, management and governance of the San Joaquin Rail Corridor (SJRRC) passed from Caltrans to the new San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority (SJJPA). This transition had a profound impact on ACE's operations as it delegated responsibility over ACE to SJRRC, ensuring streamlined and effective management. It marked a transition towards a more efficient and dedicated approach to ACE's administration, improving the quality and reliability of service.
The Mudslide Incident (March 8, 2016)
While not all events were celebratory, one event that significantly stands out is the incident that occurred on March 8, 2016. On that fateful day, an ACE train was derailed by a mudslide in Niles Canyon near Sunol. This event was very unexpected, to say the least. In the face of adversity, the ACE train crew demonstrated exceptional courage and composure. Their unwavering commitment to passenger safety and their ability to remain calm under pressure was instrumental in successfully rescuing all passengers without any fatalities. Their quick response, assistance, and professionalism in this challenging situation exemplify the dedication and excellence of our ACE team. Despite the challenges and severity of the derailment, one of the positive aspects to highlight is the remarkable dedication and professionalism of the ACE train crews. The service was able to resume the following day.
Allocation of $400 Million for ACE Forward Expansion
The state senate took a significant step by allocating $400 million in revenue from a gas tax increase to ACE forward expansion. This marked a vital milestone as it signified the commitment of state authorities to invest in the growth and expansion of the Altamont Corridor Express. The allocation of funds was a crucial step in funding infrastructure improvements and expanding services to benefit commuters and the region.
Award of $500.5 Million for Service Expansion to Ceres and Sacramento (April 2018)
In April 2018, ACE was awarded a remarkable $500.5 million for an expanded service that would connect Ceres and Sacramento. This award represented a major financial boost that allowed ACE to enhance its services and create crucial rail connections within the Central Valley. The funding catalyzed further development and improved transportation accessibility for the community.
Plans for the Altamont Corridor Vision (2019)
By 2019, the expansion plan had evolved into the Altamont Corridor Vision, with a projected cost of $9.7 billion (about $30 per person in the US). This vision was significant, as it aimed to significantly enhance ACE's capabilities and capacity. The plan intended to increase the number of weekdays round trips and achieve the goal of running ten weekdays round trips, a transformation that would revolutionize commuter transportation in the region.
Seeking Funding for a Shared Tunnel under Altamont Pass
ACE, in collaboration with the Tri-Valley-San Joaquin Valley Regional Rail Authority and Silicone Valley, sought funding for a shared tunnel under Altamont Pass. This was a strategic and transformative endeavor, as it aimed to accelerate service and enhance reliability. The construction of a shared tunnel under Altamont Pass was expected to be a meaningful change, streamlining rail travel for the community.
Double Tracking of Union Pacific Right of Way
The plan included the double tracking of the Union Pacific right of way between Ceres and Lathrop. This infrastructure improvement was of great significance as it aimed to facilitate passenger service and increase the efficiency and capacity of ACE's operations.
Platform Extensions for Longer Trains
As of 2019, platforms were being extended to accommodate longer trains. This improvement was vital in accommodating the expected growth in ridership and expanding ACE's capacity to serve the community effectively.
Saturday Service Initiation (January 2018)
ACE received Road Repair and Accountability Act funds to initiate Saturday service in January 2018, with two Saturday round trips added in September 2019. Regrettably, in the midst of ACE's journey, the COVID-19 pandemic struck, significantly impacting our operations. It resulted in the suspension of weekend services, forced adjustments to our schedules, and posed considerable challenges to our company. Nevertheless, I'm proud to say that we persevered and successfully retained all our dedicated employees. ACE demonstrated its resilience and ability to navigate through this storm."
Anticipated Service Expansion to Ceres by 2023
With the receipt of funds, ACE set its sights on expanding its services to Ceres by 2023. This expansion was highly anticipated and significant for commuters and residents in the region. The introduction of service to Ceres was expected to provide a more comprehensive and efficient transportation solution, benefiting a broader population.
Weather-Related Challenges (2023)
Weather is always a significant factor in transportation. Take, for instance, the mudslides of 2023. This event also gave a true testament to the training and ongoing dedication of our team. Amidst these unforeseen circumstances, our ACE train crew highlighted unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety of our passengers. Their enduring commitment to assisting passengers to safety during challenging moments reflects our ongoing dedication to providing a secure and reliable journey for all travelers.
The Altamont Corridor Express' inaugural service in 1998 was more than just the start of a commuter rail service.
